Filipino Spirit During Valentine's Day

We celebrate Valentine's Day to express our love to our loved ones. Based on a study by the Manila Bulletin, 79% of Filipinos celebrate Valentine’s Day by buying gifts for their significant other, family, colleagues, and friends. But for me, I express my love to a person by giving them quality time, by simply being there to support them and guide them on their journey. Quality time, more than material gifts, fosters deeper connections and understanding in relationships.

One of the most amazing things Filipinos do during Valentine's Day is mass weddings. On the 14th of February every year, hundreds of couples tie the knot in public ceremonies, often sponsored by local governments to help those who can't afford a wedding. This tradition not only embodies the spirit of love but also emphasizes community support and togetherness, making it a memorable and heartwarming celebration.

This year, I celebrated my Valentine’s in Dagupan because it coincided with the Regional School Press Conference. It was nice to spend my Valentine's with my co-journalists, sharing experiences and learning from each other. Additionally, it created a good memory because I won 5th place in the event of Column Writing, even though it was my first time joining this event. This achievement added a special touch to the day, highlighting the importance of passion and perseverance.

In conclusion, Valentine's Day in the Philippines is a multifaceted celebration that goes beyond romantic love. It encompasses gestures of affection towards family, friends, and the community, with unique traditions like mass weddings that symbolize unity and support. Whether through quality time, thoughtful gifts, or communal events, the day is a testament to the various ways love can be expressed and cherished.
